We think NetherRealm Studios might be trolling everyone. Earlier today we were ecstatic to watch as NetherRealm revealed the first three DLC characters coming to Injustice 2. Starfire, Red Hood, and Sub-Zero are all on the way, and those were three of the most-requested characters from fans the world over. What was more exciting, though, were the final moments of the reveal trailer. Standing behind our three newly-revealed DLC characters were the silhouettes of the remaining 6 fighters, and with a little bit of tweaking, you could make out some very distinct shapes. See all of the silhouettes along with their matching characters in the gallery below.
Just look at that. Raiden is a sure thing, right? And if you’re a DC Comics fan then you probably made out Black Manta’s shape just as quickly there on the left. We think we have some pretty good guesses at who the remaining four shapes are, and you can see our predictions right here, but we’re starting to second guess ourselves.
NetherRealm and Ed Boon have a history of playing pranks on their fan base. Some might call it trolling, but it’s honestly all in good fun. There is one instance that comes to mind specifically, because it also had to do with DLC characters being teased with silhouettes.
When Mortal Kombat X was still at the height of its popularity, Kombat Pack 2 fighters were teased standing side by side, silhouetted. Much like our beloved Raiden stands now, back then there was a shape that unmistakably belonged to Baraka. When the reveal trailer finally came along, Baraka was only there for a few moments until an alien popped out of his chest. The final character revealed in that trailer ended up being a xenomorph.
Update: Ed Boon has posted yet another image, with the same silhouettes, only they’re positioned differently and Raiden isn’t wearing his hat. There has been some debate as to whether it’s actually still Raiden, but if you check our comparison image of the two silhouettes in the gallery below you’ll see that it’s the exact same stance.
So what does this tell us? I means that we can’t count on any of those silhouettes as being definitive evidence that a certain character is coming, and we can’t count on the group of silhouettes as confirmation that certain characters aren’t coming. We could still very well be in for some Constantine or Hawkgirl.
Stay tuned. We’ll have more on Injustice 2‘s DLC roster as soon as we’re able.
