Gaming is massive, with a bigger community of players globally getting involved across thousands of different games on a daily basis. Across the world we’re much more connected than ever before which has allowed for the development of a gaming culture. This gaming culture has been created and enhanced through streaming, forums and other gaming tools. These have brought us all together and led to some incredible multiplayer action.
Gaming has always been competitive but not on the scale we’re seeing these days. Mass multiplayer games allow you not just to compete against your friends, but to match with people from around the world. This lets the best play the best and has lead to some intense showdowns.
With new games being released so often it can sometimes feel like you’ve missed the trend. Often a game will come out but the hype will die down after a year and the players will move on to the next big hit. On the other end of the spectrum some games are just so playable that they still have a big following even years later.
Dota 2 is one of the highest rated and most played games around, with regular online tournaments hosted globally. It’s one of those games that is timeless and once you learn more you’ll probably agree it’s never too late to play Dota 2.
What is Dota?
Dota is the commonly used slang for Defence of the Ancients. There are two different games that people refer to, first is DotA and that’s the original. This game was developed as a Mod for World of Warcraft III as a pure battle arena. DotA was the first game to kick start the multiplayer online battlefield arena (MOBA) type of game. This style of game went on to dominate the early 2000s.
Dota 2 is the other game people will refer to. This is the sequel to the original which was developed by Valve, one of the most respected game developers around. This game incorporated all the same type of game play as the first release but added a lot of different features. These included new heroes, advanced maps and some other multiplayer features that really added to the experience.
The best feature of Dota? It’s free to play and that includes characters and maps. Everything can be unlocked just by playing and gathering experience which is very rare in today’s game market.
Dota 2 is a top down multiplayer where you play team vs team. Each team has an ‘ancient’. This is a large structure and to win you will need to destroy the opponents ancient. You’ll also need to protect your own.
To do this you’ll each control a custom hero and for anyone that’s familiar with World of Warcraft this won’t really be anything new. There are over 100 different heroes to choose from with various abilities ranging from strength to agility. While you are controlling your heroes enemy units will spawn and you’ll have to face them to protect your tower.
As you play through you’ll gain experience and pick up items, much like World of Warcraft again. These will let you develop your heroes and customise them exactly how you like them. This character development is a huge part of the game and integral to improving and moving up, again a concept most WoW players will be very familiar with.
Dota 2 itself is quite a simple game in terms of concept but there’s a lot going on. You’ll find there are lots of maps, loads of heroes and a variety of ways to play to keep it fresh and enjoyable.
Dota 2 Tournaments
Dota 2 is not just one of the most popular games of all time, it’s also one of the most competitive. Even though the game was released years ago you’ll still see regular tournaments running for players of all levels. This let’s players test their skill and see how they rank compared to other players. It also give spectators a chance to watch some of the elite in action and maybe learn a thing of two.
Is it too late for Dota 2?
Dota 2 is not the most recent game out there as it came out in 2013, but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s too late to play it. In fact in a lot of ways Dota 2 has more to offer than modern equivalents even though it’s over 5 years old.
Dota 2 has millions of players around the world and it’s especially popular in North America and parts of Asia. It’s on of the most streamed games ever with record viewership plus even today is has an extremely high player count.
If you like to compete then Dota 2 still has a lot to offer. Even now there are regular online tournaments for all skill levels and there are even live events where the famous teams play in real life at the highest level. Of course if you’re looking to play at this level you’re going to have to make up the hours.
Dota 2 is still as relevant today as it ever was and it’s never too late to get involved. It’s well made, and in a lot of ways unique but the true strength of Dota is just it’s really enjoyable and playable nature. For us Dota was the original in this genre and it’s yet to be beaten and it’s still one of the best multiplayers out there.
